Things are heating up at Mesalands Community for the 20th Annual Iron Pour, March 4-10, 2018. During the Iron Pour, approximately 45 students from across the nation come together for this unique workshop. Students create their molds throughout the week and then on Friday, molten iron reaching 2,800 degrees is poured into the molds, transforming them into cast iron works of art. To celebrate the lasting success of the largest teaching foundry in New Mexico and the newly renovated Fine Arts classroom and foundry facility, Mesalands Community College has planned an entire week of activities.
The week will kick-off with Mesalands Movie Night on Sunday, March 4 at 7:00 pm at the Historic Odeon Theater located at 123 S. Second Street. Free admission for Mesalands students, faculty, and staff with a College ID.
The Art Show and Slideshow “20 Years of Iron” is Wednesday, March 7 at 6:30 pm in the Mesalands Great Room located in Building A. The Art Show will look back on students, faculty, and staff that have participated in the Iron Pour over the years and have contributed to the program’s success. Refreshments will be served. Sculptures created during prior Iron Pours will also be on display, and throughout the week in the Mesalands Library.
Come and “Meet the Iron Pour Artists” on Thursday, March 8 from 2:00-4:00 pm in the Mesalands foundry in Building D. Attendees will have a chance to create their own custom iron tiles for $15. Proceeds to benefit the Hot Metals Club at Mesalands. Tiles will be poured on Friday and will be available the following week.
The Building Dedication for the newly renovated Fine Arts classroom and foundry facility will begin at 12:00 pm on Friday, March 9. The Opening Ceremony for the actual pouring of the cast iron will follow.
