Mesalands students in the SW 218: Introduction to Social Welfare class recently assisted with the Quay County Blessings in a Backpack program, to receive hands-experience in macro-level practice. Blessings in a Backpack is a non-profit program that provides food for children across America, who may otherwise have little or no food to eat on weekends. The students will continue to help with this program throughout the semester.
“I feel as the instructor, participating in these type of programs will give students a great sense of achievement and valuable learning experience,” said Donna Garcia, Advisor of the Social Work program and Director of Academic Affairs at Mesalands Community College. “I do not feel you can teach social work without giving students the true sense of altruism that comes from giving of yourself in the field and knowing you are empowering someone else with your effort.”
