Rodeo Team performs well in roughtstock events at Annual Intercollegiate Rodeo

The Mesalands Community College Rodeo Team hosted the 12th Annual Mesalands Grand Canyon Region Intercollegiate Fall Rodeo last weekend at the Quay County Rodeo Arena. Mesalands had over 500 attendees to the rodeo.

“Overall, the rodeo went well and we put on a really good rodeo!” said Matt Hughes, Intercollegiate Rodeo Coach and Faculty Member at Mesalands. “I also want to thank all of the volunteers who helped make this rodeo successful.”

The Men’s Team dominated the roughstock events at the Mesalands Rodeo. In bull riding, Wyatt Wells of Hereford, TX took second place and fellow teammate Vinell Mariano of Pinedale, NM finished in third place.

In bareback riding, Jesse Hay-Smith of Moscow, ID was runner up with 113 points in the average. Bareback rider AJ Kee of Farmington, MO, was third with 60 points in the average.

Saddle bronc rider Bonner Voss of Stamford, TX took second in the average.

For the Women’s Team, team ropers Taylor Strohl of Clovis, CA and Kaylee Foote of Tucumcari, qualified for the championship round and finished in the top 10.

The Mesalands Fall Rodeo was the final rodeo of the fall season. The Mesalands Rodeo Team will begin the spring season in March.

Bareback rider Jesse Hay-Smith from Moscow, ID and a member of the Mesalands Rodeo Team, finished second at the 12th Annual Mesalands Grand Canyon Region Intercollegiate Fall Rodeo.
