The Mesalands Community College Board of Trustees recently approved an agreement to lease an apartment complex in Tucumcari that will be used for student housing. The two-year master lease agreement is between Mesalands Community College and Tillman Enterprises, Inc., based in Clovis, NM. The 34-bed apartment complex will be referred to as “Stampede Village” and is located at 701 W. Tucumcari Boulevard.
Stampede Village will consist of one and two-bedroom fully furnished apartments with full kitchens. Rental costs will range from $1,550 for a double room to $2,150 for a single room, for fall and spring semesters. Summer semesters will be offered at a discounted rate. Rent will include the cost of utilities and internet service. The apartment complex will also be protected by a security fence and will have surveillance cameras.
“This new student housing project is a huge step for our institution and for our community. Stampede Village will attract more out of town students to our community and as a result, will help our academic programs continue to grow,” said Dr. Thomas W. Newsom, President of Mesalands Community College. “Our main goal it to provide a safe environment for our students, that is conducive to success in the classroom.”
Dr. Newsom also stated that Stampede Village is a unique student housing model. He said this may not be an option for every student attending Mesalands. Student residents of Stampede Village will be required to sign a housing license agreement with the College, which outlines the policies and procedures for the apartment complex. For example, only students enrolled in a minimum of 12 credit hours at Mesalands Community College, will be able to reside at Stampede Village. Students will also have to agree to not have pets, alcohol, or drugs on the premises. Students will be able to use their financial aid to help cover the cost to reside at Stampede Village.
The College is working with the owner of the project to complete construction in time for move-in starting in January. Interested students can contact the Student Affairs Office at the College at (575) 461-4413, ext. 153, for more information.
