Mesalands Community College focuses on providing quality education to all students. The school has talented faculty and instructors across various unique programs. In the silversmithing department, Eugene Ross is one of those highly gifted individuals the school is proud to have on its team. Gene is one of the most respected silversmithing artists in the state of New Mexico. At 80 years young, this outstanding veteran has a remarkable legacy with numerous achievements and accolades showcasing his excellence in the field.

Mr. Ross is a native of the Navajo tribe. Growing up, he watched his uncle, who was an award-winning silversmith, and learned fundamental silversmithing concepts through the lens of a Navajo artist. That was an integral part of his traditional life. He eventually moved to Utah and had the chance to learn with Allan Houser, one of the most renowned Native American artists of the 20th century. Eugene later entered law enforcement and became a Deputy Sheriff.

Several decades later, he went back to silversmithing, and it was like he never left. Using his Navajo culture as inspiration, he made various jewelry pieces to donate, wear, and sell. His work did not go unnoticed, as he received invitations from museums and art schools all over the state to present his work and teach it to other artists.

Today, Gene has been nominated for the Governor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts for his outstanding contribution to silversmithing in the State of New Mexico. Additionally, the House of Welcome chose one of his masterpieces (see image above) in a highly selective process for its 30th Anniversary Art exhibition. Here is a word from Eugene Ross on this piece: “I created this necklace with pride in honor of 50 years of commitment and family. It took me 1 and a half years to find and match the Morenci Turquoise stones, and the silver is sterling, which are the traditional elements of Navajo Jewelry. I created it for my wife, who is also Navajo. This piece is part of the legacy of who I am and an heirloom for our children. This necklace is part of me.”

It is an honor to have Mr. Ross as one of our instructors, and we know our students would benefit hugely from learning with this talented artist.
