The Mesalands Community College’s Rodeo Team had their second rodeo of the season last weekend at Cochise College in Douglas, AZ. The Men’s Team won two championship titles and earned 260 points and finished in fifth place.
“We improved in events that we struggled in last week,” said Tim Abbott, Interim Intercollegiate Rodeo Coach at Mesalands. “Our Team is showing signs of consistent improvement and I’m looking forward to the rest of the year.”
Mesalands team ropers had a strong performance at the Cochise College rodeo. Sophomore Morgan McVay of Sparks, NV finished first in the long round, the short round, and finally in the average. McVay earned the championship title in team roping (heeler) with Victor Ugalde (header) from New Mexico State University. Other team ropers, sophomore Chaz Kananen (header) of Roy, MT took sixth in the average with fellow teammate Daniel Baeza (heeler) of Chihuahua, Mexico. Sophomore Wyatt Rita of Sunset Beach, HI and sophomore Hayden Moore also represented well at the rodeo. Rita (header) finished seventh in the average with teammate Moore (heeler).
Sophomore Edmiles Harvey of Tsalini Springs, AZ dominated the bareback riding event. He took first place in the long round, second place in the short round, and first in the average. Harvey’s performance in Douglas, led him to win his first championship title of the season in bareback riding last weekend.
“This was a personal record. I scored a 77 the first night and a 65 the second night. I won the average by one point with a score of 142. It all worked out just right,” Harvey said.
Sophomore Mike McGinn of Haines, OR won the long round in the steer wrestling event, and finished sixth the average.
