Mesalands Rodeo Team competes at Central Arizona College

The Mesalands Community College’s Rodeo Team competed at Central Arizona College in Florence, AZ on March 9-10, 2013. After their two rodeo competitions, the Women’s Team is leading the Grand Canyon Region with the 2,035 points and the Men’s Team is second with 1,959.50 points.

“Our students are starting to really perform well. They have high expectations and they are beginning to meet them,” said C.J. Aragon, Mesalands Intercollegiate Rodeo Coach.

During the first rodeo on Saturday, March 9 Macy Fuller of Wittman, AZ once again won the Women’s All-Around Championship title and was crowned the Breakaway Roping Champion and the Goat Tying Champion. Fuller is currently leading the nation and the region in the Women’s All-Around. The Mesalands Women’s Team was named Reserve Champions at the first rodeo in Florence, AZ.

“We have a bunch of good girls on our Team. The talent level is the highest its ever been here at Mesalands,” Coach Aragon said. “Fuller is one of the favorites to do well at the college finals. She’s outstanding, and what she accomplishes in the arena, kind of speaks for itself!”

The Men’s Team finished third at the first rodeo.

On Sunday, March 10 the Men’s Team was named Reserve Champions and brought home three championship titles.

Daniel Robertson of Huntland, TN took home the championship title in tie-down roping and finished seventh in team roping. Fellow teammate Mike McGinn of Haines, OR also had a successful rodeo and won the championship title in steer wrestling. Lastly, Adriano Long of Dilkon, AZ electrified the bull riding event bringing home the championship title.

“Our bull riders have been phenomenal lately! They moved to where we are first, second, and third in the region and ranked in the top 25 in the nation,” Coach Aragon said.

The Women’s Team ended the second rodeo in fifth place. They are currently sixth in the nation.

The Mesalands Rodeo Team will be travelling back to Arizona next weekend to compete at the University of Arizona on March 23, 2013 in Tucson, AZ.
