On March 27-28, Mesalands Community College’s golf team participated in the McCook Community College Invitational in McCook, Nebraska. The team showed up full of character, seeking to get the best results possible as they look to gain confidence for the busy spring and summer season ahead.
The tournament was a significant morale boost, with the team finishing in 3rd place after day one and 4th place at the completion of the tournament. Xavier Sauceda and Aiven Martinez electrified the competition with outstanding individual performances, posting scores of 74/75 and 75/76 that led the team. Eli Raines also had a notable showing with 80/78. Finally, Malaki Mungia scored 81/84, and Jared Olague had a score of 90/86.
The team continues to improve, and coach Garcia is the first to believe in the potential of his team, as he said, “We are hopeful to see further advancement and showings in our three upcoming tournaments.” The players will look to double down on practice as they prepare for the USW invite in Hobbs, NM; the Region 5 championship in San Angelo, TX; and the South Central Qualifier in Brownwood, TX. There is a sense of hope in the Mesalands Community College camp as the golf team strives to deliver increasingly better performances in the months to come, especially at the Region 5 championship, where several nationally top-ranked teams will be present.
