Mesalands Food Drive was a SUCCESS!

Mesalands College conducted a food and hygiene products drive from November 9th through December 8th. The donated items contributed to the College’s Food Pantry, Share with Friends (Compartir Con Amigos Despensa De Comida). The community, staff members, and local organizations gathered nonperishables and toiletries such as toothbrushes, soap and razors. Items were collected at the campus library to benefit college students in need.

The food pantry, Share With Friends (Compartir Con Amigos Despensa De Comida), was created in Mesalands College’s commitment to eliminating all barriers to student success. In conjunction with mental health services and emergency funds, Mesalands College provides students with wrap around services to lead the way in student success.

“We are hoping to open on a consistent schedule starting in the spring.” Stated Michael Bilopavlovich, organizer of the Mesalands Pantry and Computer Science Faculty. “We will plan to do a food drive annually and find more opportunities to keep the shelves stocked. The college is incredibly grateful for the donations and we are excited to continue our mission of keeping students safe and healthy.”

Food Insecurity affects up to 50% of college students and disproportionally impacts 2-year colleges. The implementation of food pantries are shown to improve mental health outcomes and increase retention rates.

Students who would like to visit our food pantry or community members interested in donating goods may contact Michael Bilopavlovich at [email protected]. Those looking for career opportunities or continuing their education as a student may contact the College at 575.461.6600.

The Ministry of Hope also runs a food pantry locally and is open to the public on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
