President Dr. Newsom speaks at correctional facility graduation

Dr. Thomas W. Newsom, President of Mesalands, encourages the recent graduates at the Otero County Prison Facility, to find their potential for future success.

Dr. Thomas W. Newsom, President of Mesalands Community College, was the guest speaker at the recent Otero County Prison Facility (OCPF) Graduation Ceremony in Chaparral, NM.

Dr. Newsom’s speech began by him explaining the academic regalia he was wearing at the graduation ceremony. He said he was wearing his full regalia as a symbol of respect to those in attendance at the event.

Dr. Newsom also shared his experience climbing the wind turbine at Mesalands. He said this had been one of his goals since becoming the President of Mesalands. He said it wasn’t easy reaching this goal and it took some time. He also said climbing the wind turbine was an amazing experience. He shared this story to encourage the graduates to develop a plan to reach their ultimate goals in life.

“It’s always a pleasure to witness first-hand how Mesalands Community College’s faculty and staff are truly embracing the mission of providing higher education for our students in these facilities,” Dr. Newsom. “As a result, our College is opening the doors of future opportunities for these students and changing lives one student a time.”
