Mesalands Community College is pleased to announce that Mesalands student, Sherra Swapp, was recently awarded the 2017 Vicky Froehlich Memorial Scholarship at the 28th Annual New Mexico Mathematical Association for Two-Year Colleges (NMMATYC) Conference. The conference was held at Dona Ana Community College in Las Cruces, NM. This was the biannual joint conference, to celebrate mathematics education with the southwest section of the Mathematical Association of America. Swapp also received travel expenses to attend the conference. She was accompanied to the conference by Dr. Philip Kaatz, Mathematics/Physical Science Faculty at Mesalands. This was the third consecutive year that a Mesalands student has received a math scholarship at this conference.

Swapp is a sophomore at Mesalands pursuing an Associate of Arts degree in Liberal Arts. She is currently a tutor at the College’s Math-Science Learning Center and plans to become a math teacher. This fall, Sherra will be participating in a year and a half mission assignment in Arcadia, CA. She then plans to return to Mesalands to complete her associate’s degree, prior to transferring to a four-year institution, to pursue her teaching interests.
