Online Course Requirements

Basic requirements for participation in the College's online courses include:

  • Adequate computer-Operating System: Windows 98, or higher. Minimum-Pentium processor, 32 megabytes memory, 1 gigabyte hard drive, monitor, 28.8k modem, sound card and speakers. Recommended-Pentium III, 64 megabytes memory, 2 gigabyte hard drive, monitor, 56 k modem, sound card and speakers. Pentium class with a speed of at least 100 Mega Hertz is recommended
  • Version 5.0 or greater of Internet Explorer or Version 7.0 of Netscape Navigator is required for the current version of WebCT.
  • An internet connection-some courses have video media content requiring a high speed connection such as a 56K modem connecting at least at 44Kbps.

The online courses extend educational opportunities to students who desire options other than traditional on-campus courses. Online courses receive the same college credit and fulfill the same degree and certificate requirements as the traditional courses. Flexibility and convenience are the keys for Distance Education courses. They allow the student to set his or her own schedule for completing assignments and exams, and the ability to complete the required work at home.

Online courses require a commitment of time equal to traditional on-campus courses, as well as the ability to schedule, monitor self-progress, and maintain self-motivation for the learner.

Online courses have regularly scheduled beginning and ending dates ( for the Institutional Calendar click here) and there are deadline dates assigned for your classroom activities which may include homework, assigned readings, examinations, and perhaps required classroom discussion activities. Your instructor will give you specific assignment instructions and should be able to guide you through this process.

Prior to enrolling in an online course consideration should be given to the following abilities a student must possess or learn un order to successfully complete an online course.

1. Be adept in use of an internet browser including:
-Reaching various web sites including library resources
          -Using the WebCT software
-Find, Read, and, as required, reference electronic documents

2. Use of a word processor including saving/converting into various file types (formats)

3. Comfortable with managing files on own computer

An online course is not an easy way out of work. In some cases it requires more effort since no direct face to face communication with the instructor is available and no one-on-one help (other then email or chat board) can be used when confused. Normally  students spend two hours of preparation time is expected for every credit hour of class. Students in a three credit hour course could be expected to be in class-related activities on or off-line for about nine hours per week, and more if they are completely new to the material or struggling in the course. The course software, WebCT, automatically records every time a student accesses the class website, keeps track of grades, and facilitates communication between students and instructor. There is complete security of student records accessible only to the instructor. Click on the link below for more information about WebCT.
