HIST 160 The United States and Vietnam 1940-1975

The Vietnam War, the nation’s longest, cost fifty-eight thousand American lives. Only the Civil War and the two world wars were deadlier for Americans. The United States spent over $140 billion on the war. However, for the first time in the nation’s history, it failed to achieve its war aims of preserving a separate, independent, noncommunist government in South Vietnam. The war brought to an end domestic unity that had sustained U.S. cold war policies since the end of World War II. The legacy of the war had profound consequences for many people in the country.
